Privacy Policy
Welcome to Cuisinova. This Privacy Policy explains how Cuisinova ("we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, discloses, and protects your personal information when you use our mobile application ("App") and related services (collectively, the "Services").
By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.
1. Who this policy applies to
The Service is intended for users 13 years of age or older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, contact us at hello@cuisinovacooking.com and we will delete it. Some jurisdictions (including parts of the European Economic Area) require a higher minimum age (16) for processing personal data without parental consent; if you are under that age in your jurisdiction, please do not use the Service without parental consent.
2. Information we collect
We collect the following categories of information.
2.1 Information you provide
- Account information. When you create an account, we collect your email address, a password (stored only as a salted hash; we never see your plaintext password), and an optional display name.
- Recipe content you create or import. This includes recipes you type in,
generate with our AI tools, remix, save by URL, or capture by photo. Depending on the
action you take in the App:
- If you choose to save a recipe photo to your recipe, the photo is uploaded to and retained on our servers as part of that recipe.
- If you only use a photo to parse a recipe (and do not save the photo with the recipe), we transmit the photo to our AI processor only for the duration of parsing and do not retain the original photo on our servers after the recipe text is extracted.
- URLs you submit for parsing. When you import a recipe from a URL, we fetch the page contents and process the relevant recipe text.
- Voice input. When you use voice mode, audio is processed by Apple's on-device speech recognition where supported by your device; on devices without on-device support, Apple may process the audio under Apple's privacy practices. We do not record, transmit to our servers, or store your raw voice audio.
- Communications. If you email hello@cuisinovacooking.com or contact support, we keep your message and any attachments to respond.
2.2 Information collected automatically
- Device and usage information. Device model, iOS/iPadOS version, App version, language and locale, time zone, and basic interaction events (e.g., screens viewed, features used).
- Diagnostic and crash data. If the App crashes or encounters an error, we receive diagnostic reports through our crash reporting provider (Sentry and/or Apple Crashlytics). These reports may include device identifiers, stack traces, and limited app state.
- Apple App Analytics. We use Apple's built-in App Analytics, which provides aggregated, privacy-preserving statistics from users who have opted in to share analytics with developers in iOS settings.
We do not use third-party advertising SDKs, ad networks, or behavioral advertising trackers. We do not engage in cross-app tracking and do not request the App Tracking Transparency permission.
2.3 Information we do not collect
We do not collect precise geolocation, contacts, photo library contents (beyond the specific images you choose to import into the App), health data, or financial account information.
3. How we use your information
We use the information we collect to:
- Provide and operate the Service, including syncing your saved recipes across your devices.
- Run AI features you initiate, such as parsing a recipe from a photo or URL, generating a new recipe, or remixing an existing one.
- Authenticate you and secure your account.
- Diagnose and fix bugs, prevent abuse, and improve performance and reliability.
- Communicate with you about the Service, including security or service announcements and responses to support requests.
- Comply with legal obligations and enforce our Terms of Service.
We do not use your personal information or recipe content for advertising, and we do not sell your personal information.
4. AI features and how Anthropic processes your data
Several Cuisinova features rely on AI: extracting recipes from photos, parsing recipes from URLs, generating recipes from prompts, and remixing existing recipes. These features are optional — they only run when you choose to use them.
When you use an AI feature, we send the necessary inputs (such as your photo, prompt, the URL's recipe content, or the recipe you are remixing) to Anthropic's API for processing. Anthropic returns the resulting text to us, and we deliver it back to you in the App.
- No training on your data. We use Anthropic's standard API, under which Anthropic does not use customer inputs or outputs to train its models by default.
- Sub-processor. Anthropic acts as our sub-processor for the AI features. You can review Anthropic's privacy practices at https://www.anthropic.com/legal/privacy.
- Apple is not used as an AI provider. Apple's role is limited to on-device speech recognition and text-to-speech for voice mode.
If we add additional AI providers in the future, we will update this Policy.
5. Voice mode and text-to-speech
Voice input and speech output use Apple's native Speech and AVFoundation frameworks. Where your device supports on-device speech recognition, your voice is processed locally on your device. Otherwise, audio may be transmitted to Apple for recognition, subject to Apple's privacy practices. Cuisinova does not store or transmit your raw voice audio to our servers, and we do not process your voice with any third-party AI provider.
6. How we share information
We share information only in these limited circumstances:
- Service providers (sub-processors). We share information with vendors who
help us operate the Service under contract, including:
- Anthropic, PBC — AI inference for recipe parsing, generation, and remixing.
- Apple Inc. — App distribution, App Analytics, Sign in with Apple (if you use it), and on-device/Apple-hosted speech services for voice mode.
- Sentry / Apple Crashlytics — crash and error reporting.
- Cloud hosting and storage providers for our backend (e.g., a cloud platform that hosts our servers and database).
- Legal and safety. We may disclose information when required by law, valid legal process, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of Cuisinova, our users, or the public.
- Business transfers. If Cuisinova is involved in a merger, acquisition, financing, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will notify you and/or post a notice in the App if such a transfer occurs.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising.
7. Data retention
- Account and recipes. We retain your account information and recipes for as long as your account is active. You can delete individual recipes from within the App at any time.
- Account deletion. You can delete your account from within the App or by emailing hello@cuisinovacooking.com. Upon deletion, we delete or anonymize your account information and recipes within 30 days, except where we are legally required to retain certain records.
- Photos used only for parsing. Photos that you do not save to a recipe are processed and then discarded after parsing completes; we do not retain copies on our servers.
- Diagnostic data. Crash and diagnostic reports are retained for up to 90 days.
- Backups. Encrypted backups of our systems may retain residual copies for a limited period before being overwritten in the normal course of operations.
8. Security
We use industry-standard safeguards to protect your information, including encryption in transit (TLS), encryption at rest for our databases and stored photos, salted password hashing, and access controls. No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. If we learn of a security incident affecting your information, we will notify you as required by applicable law.
9. Your privacy rights
Depending on where you live, you may have certain rights regarding your personal information. We honor these rights regardless of where you live, to the extent practical.
9.1 California residents (CCPA/CPRA)
Under the California Consumer Privacy Act, as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act, you have the right to:
- Know what categories of personal information we collect, the sources, the purposes, and the categories of recipients.
- Access a copy of the specific personal information we have about you.
- Delete your personal information, subject to certain exceptions.
- Correct inaccurate personal information.
- Limit the use of sensitive personal information (we do not use sensitive personal information for purposes that would trigger this right).
- Opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information. We do not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising.
- Non-discrimination for exercising your rights.
To exercise these rights, email hello@cuisinovacooking.com from the email address associated with your account, or use the in-app account deletion feature. We may need to verify your identity before fulfilling your request. You may also designate an authorized agent.
The categories of personal information we have collected in the last 12 months are listed in Section 2 above. We have not "sold" or "shared" personal information as defined under the CCPA/CPRA in the last 12 months.
9.2 EEA, UK, and other regions
If you are located in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or another jurisdiction with similar laws, you may have rights to access, rectify, delete, restrict, or object to processing of your personal data, and to data portability. Where we rely on consent, you may withdraw it at any time. To exercise these rights, contact hello@cuisinovacooking.com. You may also lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
Our legal bases for processing are: performance of our contract with you (operating the Service), our legitimate interests (security, debugging, improving the Service), your consent (for optional features such as AI parsing and generation), and compliance with legal obligations.
10. International data transfers
Cuisinova is operated from the United States. If you access the Service from outside the United States, your information will be transferred to and processed in the United States and other countries where our service providers operate. Where required, we use appropriate transfer mechanisms (such as the EU Standard Contractual Clauses) for transfers of data from the EEA, UK, or Switzerland.
11. Children's privacy
The Service is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal information, please contact us at hello@cuisinovacooking.com and we will delete it.
12. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you through the App or by email and update the "Last updated" date above. Your continued use of the Service after the changes take effect constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
